The Mission (Ennio Morricone)

Ennio Morricone
Nothing says a Sunday night like some good Ennio Morricone: An Italian composer who has scored over 400 films including The Mission, Mission To Mars, and worked exclusively with Quentin Tarantino for Kill Bill, Death Proof, and Inglorious Bastards. Basically, he is who I want to be. The Mission soundtrack is my favorite scored film of all time. The soundtrack combines liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars. The main theme, "Falls", remains one of Morricone's most memorable pieces, and has been used in numerous commercials since its original release. The soundtrack was nominated for an Academy Award in 1986 and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. It was selected as the 23rd best film score in American Cinema according to AFI's 100 Years of Film Scores. The music was also used during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I feel like Jack Black says it best (The Holiday):
Miles: "Oh my God. Okay, this one? You have to check this out some time. The Mission. The score is genius. It just comes from a totally different place. It's like... I can't even... Just promise me you'll rent it and listen to it.
Iris: Renting.
Miles: Thank you. It changed my world.

Cherry Bomb (The Runaways)

Every morning I wake up, I have weird music cravings. This morning, it's The Runaways. It's probably due to my desire to see the new movie "The Runaways" starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, and my love for the show Freaks and Geeks which has "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett as the theme song. The Runaways’ story is a fascinating look at a band that came up at the time punk rock was being born in the U.S. Because of their youth, their legitimacy is often overlooked, but the fact is they toured with the Ramones and Blondie, and ultimately were to become as much associated as the New York punks as they were with the California scene.
The Runaways, Heart, Patti Smith, Pat Benatar, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Annie Lennox, Stevie Nicks, etc are all some of the greatest female rock bands, singers, guitarists in history. Sometimes when I'm feeling kind of low, I watch 1970's female rock band videos to see if they empower me, and they typically do. So here's just some of the things I've been enjoying this post-birthday morning.
The Runaways The Runaways features Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning respectively as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie from the infamous female rock band, The Runaways. I am not a Kristen Stewart fan, but I am dying to see this movie. Plus, the story of The Runaways combines the best formula for any film: sex(lesbian), drugs and rock 'n roll. If I were to actually be a rock star, hands down I would be mix between Joan Jett and Nancy Wilson (I will discuss my love for Heart in a short moment). (Courtesy of theplaylist.blogspot.com)
Promotional images, include an updated version of a 1976 magazine cover the band did for Crawdaddy magazine, a rock n' roll criticism magazine formed in '60s. Here's a side-by-side comparison of the re-do with the original cover and although the position of band members is slightly altered, the cover retains all the same headlines and Currie in the center. Co-starring in the film are the likes of Scout Taylor-Compton as Lita Ford, Stella Maeve as Sandy West, Alia Shawkat as a fictionalized composite of the band's many bass players named Robin and Michael Shannon in a potentially scene-stealing role as the band's exploitative manager, Kim Fowley. "The Runaways" hits theaters March 19th A movie review would not be complete without a peak at the soundtrack so take a look:
Photobucket "The Runaways" Soundtrack Tracklisting 1. “Roxy Roller” by Nick Gilder 2. “The Wild One” by Suzi Quatro 3. “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by MC5 4. “Rebel Rebel” by David Bowie 5. “Cherry Bomb” by Dakota Fanning 6. “Hollywood” by The Runaways 7. “California Paradise” by Dakota Fanning 8. “You Drive Me Wild” by The Runaways 9. “Queens of Noise” by Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart 10. “Dead End Justice” by Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning 11. “I Wanna Be Your Dog” by The Stooges 12. “I Wanna Be Where the Boys Are (Live)” by The Runaways 13. “Pretty Vacant” by Sex Pistols 14. “Don’t Abuse Me” by Joan Jett
Here are my other favorite female musicians 1. Heart Sisters Ann Wilson, the wide-ranged lead singer and Nancy Wilson, my second favorite guitar player in the world, formed the 1970's rock group from Seattle known as Heart. "Barracuda", "Crazy On You" and "Magic Man" are just some of their top hits. Ann Wilson has some of the best chops I've ever heard come out of a rock singer and Nancy Wilson is my idol. She has been recorded to saying that the combination of acoustic and electric guitar in "Crazy On You" is heavily influenced by "Over the Hills And Far Away" by Led Zeppelin. Her and Ann did a cover of "Battle of Evermore" by Led Zeppelin that is amazing, & Nancy did the score for my favorite movie Almost Famous.
2. Patti Smith An American singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist, who became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement. She is strange, experimental, and fucked up and I love her. I had heard of her but it wasn't until I saw her get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 that I really paid attention. The song below "Horses" is really disturbing but mesmerizing at the same time. It just puts me in a sort of hypnosis that I can't explain...hopefully you can:

OH HOT DAMN, THIS IS MY JAM!
Electronic Birthday Playlist

Today, is my birthday. I'm the big 1 9! And in honor of that, I have revealed my Get The Fuck Up And Dance playlist. Electronic music is one of my current genre obsessions that started in 2008 when I discovered MGMT. Then last year I discovered....Girl Talk. From there it expanded to Super Mash Bros, DJ Danger Mouse, RJD2, etc. I took some extra time making this playlist because I believe it is essential to have a good quality fucking awesome dance playlist. You NEVER know when it might come in handy. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I do. Posted below is my new current obsession DJ Earworm and his mix of the Billboard Top 25 songs of 2009...it's CRAZY!

Ultra Music Festival
The World’s most famous outdoor electronic music event, is held annually in Miami, Florida during March, coinciding with the Winter Music Conference. UMF Miami 2009 set a new record with more than 85,000 party people in attendance over two days, coming to Ultra from 56 countries & territories, 50 states and Puerto Rico.

Originally created as a pure EDM (electronic dance music) festival in 1999, Ultra has grown through the years to present not only the World’s hottest, biggest and best headline EDM artists (The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Tiesto, Underworld, MOBY, Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox, Paul van Dyk, David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren, Erick Morillo, Deadmau5 and Paul Oakenfold, to name a few), but also crossover headline bands that incorporate EDM elements in their music and have a history, or new beginning in the EDM community and culture (The Cure, The Killers, The Black Eyed Peas, Bloc Party, The Bravery).

Check out this lineup!

Here at Loyola, we've got some pretty damn good djs and an even better electronic music scene. This is what we've got.

Kashmir (Led Zeppelin)

Finally finished my post-Mardi Gras room cleaning and look what I found under my beads (bought these used CDs about a week or so ago - great investment):

Free Willy Soundtrack

Track Listing
1. "Will You Be There" - Michael Jackson
2. "Keep On Smilin'" - New Kids On The Block
3. "Didn't Mean To Hurt You" - 3T
4. "Right Here" - Sisters With Voices
5. "How Can You Leave Me Now" - Funky Poets
6. "Main Title" - Basil Poledouris
7. "Connection" - Basil Poledouris
8. "The Gifts" - Basil Poledouris
9. "Friends Montage" - Basil Poledouris
10. "Audition" - Basil Poledouris
11. Farewell Suite - Basil Poledouris
12. Will you Be There (Reprise) - Michael Jackson

Godzilla Soundtrack

Track Listing
1. "Heroes" - The Wallflowers
2. "Come With Me" - Puff Daddy feat. Jimmy Page
3. "Deeper Underground" - Jamiroquai
4. "No Shelter" - Rage Against The Machine
5. "Air" - Ben Fold Five
6. "Running Knees" - Days Of The New
7. "Macy Day Parade" - Miachel Penn
8. "Walk The Sky" - Fuel
9. "A320" - Foo Fighters
10. "Brain Stew (Godzilla Remix)" - Green Day
11. "Untitled" - Silverchair
12. "Out There" - Fuzzbubble
13. "Undercover" - Joey DeLuxe
14. "Opening Titles" - David Arnold
15. "Looking For Clues" - David Arnold

If you think I'm joking with these two soundtracks, you'd be correct. However, "Will You Be There" by Michael Jackson is amazing and when he does his little speaking part in the song...it does it for me (R.I.P. MJ). Plus, name one person who doesn't like Free Willy. You can't, because it's that inspiring.

In Godzilla's case, the movie sucks. But look at that soundtrack. You've got The Wallflowers, Jamiroquai, Ben Folds Five and Foo Fighters. Now I despise Green Day, but "Brain Stew" is tolerable (although it's sampled directly from Chicago's song "25 Or 6 To 4"). What cracks me up is that on the album it's titled "Brain Stew (The Godzilla Remix)" when really the only "remix" part of the song are the random Godzilla roars sprinkled in throughout the song. But the real treat is the Puff Daddy and Jimmy Page duo. Everyone knows I am a die-hard Zeppelin fan and I gotta tell you, this song is amazing. "Kashmir" is just a certified bad ass song and it was only a matter of time before someone rapped over it - it just unfortunately had to be P.Diddy.

By The Way, I'm about to head down to the Circle Bar downtown to see my friends in Sun Hotel play and I just started a page about local New Orleans bands so check it out on the right column.

Before we could read, before we knew our multiplication factors, before we knew the truth about Santa Clause, our little ears were subject to whatever our parents desired. Think about the time, before you knew you had discretion towards your music taste. This playlist right here, are the songs that shaped my childhood. These are the songs that my parents enjoyed so inevitably I sang along. I hope that when you listen to this, you'll be able to reminisce with me as well. Keep in mind, I was an odd child and I think these songs are a good representation of that. Combine this playlist, with 90's SciFi channel, any space movie and Star Trek....well you've got yourself a little Kayla.

ENJOY

If my brother is reading this right now, you better call me the second you start listening to this playlist. You're the only one who understands all these songs.

P.S. if any of the songs spark questions, i have answers.

Little Secrets (Passion Pit)

Congratulations, you now know the secrets to my musical knowledge. Look on the right column, scroll down and you will see a few links I posted. All are sites I use daily to get my share of music news, recommendations, reviews, etc. Some sites even allow you to download free music!

Notice the title of this blog....Passion Pit

I knew this song a while back, but revisited it when I heard it on a Palm Pixi commercial. When I get obsessed with songs, I listen to them non stop. Anyone on my floor can attest to hearing this song numerous times.

Piano Version I WANT TO LEARN THIS!

Strange Times (Black Keys)

Go to class....or continue to watch The Black Keys on youtube????

October 30, 2009. Voodoo Music Festival. New Orleans, LA. It was about 60 degrees outside, pouring rain, gusts of wind, no umbrella, no poncho, but The Black Keys were playing - and they were playing harder than any band I've ever seen. Patrick (the drummer) broke 3 sets of drumsticks during their set. I can't wait to see them at Bonnaroo this summer.

Anyways, I woke up this morning, did my usual routine of internet browsing (facebook, email, mydrunktexts...)then I looked at the two music festivals that I will not be able to attend since they are back at home in Florida. BUT if anyone has friends in Florida, I highly recommend you tell them about this:

1) Harvest of Hope March 12-14th, 2010 (St. Augustine, FL)

Delta Spirit, Dr. Dog, Broken Social Scene, Kimya Dawson, The Mountain Goats && Portugal, the Man??? This festival is located right where I live, and last year the lineup was insane (The National, GIRL TALK!, Less Than Jake, Black Kids, Tokyo Police Club, Deerhunter, King Kahn & The Shrines, etc.) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going!!!!

2) Wanee Music Festival April 16 & 17th, 2010 (Live Oak, FL)

Since when did Florida have a good music scene? A friend of mine told me a few weeks ago about this festival that's been going on for quite some time. Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, Gov't Mule, Derek Trucks, BLACK KEYS!!!!, Dr. John, The Meters, North Mississippi Allstars, George Clinton & P-Funk, The Wailers....If anyone has any common sense, they wouldn't need me to elaborate anymore. This lineup just screams Florida, and I'm jealous that once again I'll be in New Orleans.

School of Rock (School of Rock)

Since word has reached my mother about this blog, I will now release a bit of information from my music vault....say about 8th/9th grade. This playlist was made in 8th/9th grade and is titled "You" because there are other playlists I made that will soon be leaked to you all and they are titled "Should", "Take", "A", "Listen". Excluding the Dr. Dog in here, the last time I touched this playlist was in 2008.

I'm adding to it as we speak. It will be a very extensive list. Please take a peak.

Fix Up, Look Sharp (Dizzee Rascal)

Turns out I can use HTML on this thing and as a former Myspace user (don't deny it, you had one too), I think I can remember some of the codes. I'll try to make this look as esthetically pleasing as possible.

In honor of "fixing" this place up, here are few of my favorite songs with "fix" in them or in the band name.

- "Fix Up, Look Sharp" - Dizzee Rascal
- "Fixing a Hole" - The Beatles
- "One Thing Leads To Another" - The Fixx
(I always thought this song was sampled in "Middle of Nowhere" - Hot Hot Heat)
- "Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy" - Glen Hansard
- "Fix It" - Grizzly Bear
- "The Fix" - Minus The Bear
- "Sunshine Fix" - The Sunshine Fix
- "Don't Bother" - Shakira (FROM the "Oral FIXation" album!) - yes!

Drive (Incubus)

My business professor told me: "In order to be happy in life, find out what you do when you procrastinate and try to make a living off of it".

I make playlists, so inevitably the thought of getting paid to apply songs to everyday life would be ideal. Hence, I would love to be a music supervisor.

I've made many playlists but this one is my favorite. I'm constantly revising it and one day will hopefully have an order of songs someday.

Back in Florida, there's one long straight road called Roscoe with trees towering over passing cars and driving it at night, with my cruise control on while listening to this playlist, is my favorite thing to do back home.

Beginning To See The Light (Velvet Underground)

Here it is, my first blog.
I'll title each blog with a song title (I'll give credit to That 70's Show which titled each of their episodes after a song)
One of my professors said that anyone who wants to be a music supervisor (me!) - those who choose music for movies/tv/commercials - needs a blog to get your music recommendations out there to the world. So that's exactly what I've done. Current Obsessions, Playlists, Recommendations, Reviews....it'll be here.
Current Obsessions Charlie Hunter Gentlemen, I Neglected To Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid Favorites: 1) You Look Good In Orange 2) Antoine 5) High Pockets and a Fanny Pack Eric Biondo is the trumpet player on this album and also happens to be the trumpet player from one of my favorite bands, TV On The Radio. Charlie Hunter + TV On The Radio Trumpet player = you CANNOT go wrong! Galactic Ya-Ka-May Favorites: EVERYTHING! As a student at Loyola University in New Orleans, this album makes me even more proud be a resident of New Orleans. This album is definitely a different direction for the jazz/funk band. The blend of hip-hop, Stanton Moore's drums, and even one of my favorite New Orleans brass band Rebirth make this album a MUST HAVE. Garage A Trois Power Patriot Jizz. Charlie Hunter on his eight-string guitar, Stanton Moore on drums, MARCO BENEVENTO on keyboards and Skerik on sax....I honestly don't have anything more to say about this album.

Benevento-Russo Duo Best Reason To Buy The Sun Track 3: "Sunny's Song". I was obsessed with this song for the longest time (I listened to it at least 7 times in a row). Marco Benevento is one of the greatest keyboardists of today. I was extremely upset when I missed him at the Blue Nile in New Orleans back in September 2009, but he'll come again, that I am sure of.
